about

My name is Stephanie Mitchell. I live in a tiny little flat on top of a heritage house in Victoria, British Columbia. My kitchen has one plug outlet and a temperamental fuse box. This means that even with extension cords, I can only plug in one appliance at a time. But I persevere: I can’t stop cooking and baking and creating more dishes to wash.

I dreamed up dollop of cream as a way of preserving and passing on heritage recipes. These are recipes from my Scots-Irish Grandma and German Oma, as well as grandmother recipes from other cultures I come across – Ukrainian, Dutch, Maritime and West Coast Canadian, West African, English and Indian for a start . . . Grandmother recipes just taste good. They're not often complicated, but they can be. They are what you would hope to eat at grandmother’s house.

You may be wondering what gluten is, and why I’m often giving gluten-free versions of these recipes. Gluten is an elastic protein in wheat, spelt, barley, rye and kamut. If my celiac husband eats gluten, he’ll get very sick. If he doesn’t eat it, he has more energy to wash all the dishes I create. For that reason (and because I love him), I always create gluten-free versions of regular recipes. That way, everyone’s happy.

In my other life, I am a writer and legal careers advisor. I’ve also been known to work as a radio journalist. I also like to read novels, drink tea, plant garlic and go outside.
